Inherited from Middle French neiger, from Old French negier, from Vulgar Latin *nivicāre, a verb based on Latin nivem (“snow”, noun). Compare Italian nevicare.
neiger (impersonal)
This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written neige- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as bouger and manger. This verb is impersonal and is conjugated only in the third-person singular.
