From Proto-Finnic *peikälo (with varying forms in descendants, such as dialectal peikalo, Karelian peikalo, Veps peigol, Estonian pöial, Livonian pēgal), probably a somewhat irregular derivation of Pre-Proto-Finnic *pelkä, from Proto-Uralic *pälkä (compare Northern Sami bealgi, Erzya пелька (peľka, thumb), Komi-Zyrian пев (pev)).
