From μυέω (muéō, “I initiate”), from μῡ́ω (mū́ō, “I shut”), + -της (-tēs). The sense development was probably "to shut" > "(one who) shuts one's eyes" > "one who is or is to be initiated (in the Eleusinian mysteries)".[1]
