From μυέω (muéō, I initiate), from μῡ́ω (mū́ō, I shut), +‎ -της (-tēs). The sense development was probably "to shut" > "(one who) shuts one's eyes" > "one who is or is to be initiated (in the Eleusinian mysteries)".[1]
