Uncertain. Commonly connected with Latin foedus (“ugly”). Beekes argues for an origin as a substrate loan-word or perhaps Pre-Greek. The same suffix can be found in ἱέραξ (hiérax, “falcon”) and μύρμηξ (múrmēx, “ant”).
