Inherited from Old East Slavic мьстьникъ (mĭstĭnikŭ, “avenger”), from Proto-Slavic *mьstьnikъ (“avenger”). By surface analysis, (obsolete) месть (mestʹ, “vengeance”) + -ник (-nyk) or from (rare) ме́сний (mésnyj, “vengeful”) + -ик (-yk). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic мьстьникъ (mĭstĭnikŭ).
