Etymology

Unclear:

  • According to EDAL,[1] inherited from Proto-Turkic *sïrga (or *ïsïrga, *asïrga), whence also Russian серьга. Initial a~ï~∅ alternation is problematic for the reconstruction, and indicates foreign origin of the word. EDAL proposes that forms reflecting *ɨsɨrga or *asɨrga are perhaps influenced by *as- (to hang).
  • According to Brandt, borrowed from Russian серьга.

Cognate with Bashkir һырға (hırğa), Siberian Tatar сырға (sırğa, earring), Tatar, Kyrgyz, Southern Altai, Tuvan сырга (syrga), Crimean Tatar sırğa, Uzbek isirgʻa, Turkmen ysyrga, Khakas ызырға (ızırğa), Yakut ытарҕа (ıtarğa, earring), etc.
