Inherited from Old Ruthenian худоба (xudoba), from Old East Slavic худоба (xudoba), from Proto-Slavic *xudoba (leanness, thinness), from *xudъ +‎ *-oba. By surface analysis, худи́й (xudýj, thin, skinny) +‎ -оба (-oba). The use of the word to denote livestock may be attributable to taboo avoidance.[1]
