Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ǵ(e)y-ǵl̥H-, reduplication of the root, which yielded ծաղր (całr). Alternatively, an onomatopoeic word.

The word is not attested in classical Old Armenian, however it certainly existed back then as shown by its attested derivatives and the modern Armenian descendant.
