The origin is uncertain. One suggestion connects Latin niger (“black”), assuming Proto-Indo-European *neg⁽ʷ⁾-r- (“painted, colored, darkened”), and thus possibly related to *nókʷts (“night”), but the existence of such a root is disputed and not evidenced further.
