Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tāy, *dāj (“maternal uncle”); cognate with Old Turkic (tay, tagay), Azerbaijani dayı, Kyrgyz тай (tay), Southern Altai таай (taay), Turkmen daýy and Yakut таай (taay). Akin to Persian دایی (dâyi) and تغایی (tağāyī), both Turkic borrowings.
