Etymology
From a Proto-Iranian root not attested in Middle Persian. Cognate with Mazanderani کلاج (kalāǰ), Gilaki کلاچ (kəlāč), Northern Luri غلا (qelā), Ossetian халон (xalon). Probably ultimately onomatopoeic, but perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ḱer- (“crow”); compare Latin corvus, Ancient Greek κόρᾰξ (kórax), Proto-Germanic *hrabnaz.
