Or ข้าว (kâao) + reflex of Proto-Tai *ʰlaːmᴬ (“cooked in bamboo tube”) (possibly related to Mon ခလာမ် (həlam), Khmer ក្រឡាន (krɑlaan) and Vietnamese lam in cơm lam).
In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Lao ເຂົ້າຫລາມ (khao lām).
