From นคร (ná-kɔɔn, “city”) + ราช (râat, “royal”) + สีมา (sǐi-maa, “border; boundary”); literally "city royal border "; believed to have been adapted from the names of the two ancient city-states located in the area, โคราช (koo-râat) and เสมา (sěe-maa).
