Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (khɑ¹ rɑm³ "eggplant"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. As a non-basic color term, "purple" is likely to be derived from an object, so "eggplant" is likely the original meaning; however, it is also not covered by STEDT. Is this a borrowing? If not, perhaps from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-ram (“indigo”). Compare Old Chinese 藍 (OC *ɡ·raːm, “indigo”). The first syllable bears some resemblance to Old Chinese 茄 (OC *ɡa, *ɡal, *kraːl, “eggplant”). This whole lemma seems to be an area word. Compare Old Chinese 紺 (OC *kɯːms, “purple, violet”) and Proto-Tai *klamᴮ (“dark (red)”) (whence Thai คล้ำ (klám, “dark”)).”
