Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-yaːp (“to fan, winnow, paddle, wave”); cognate with Mizo zâap (“fan”), Tibetan གྱབ་མོ (gyab mo, “to fan, wave”), as well as perhaps Old Chinese 箑 (OC *sreːb, *sreb, “fan”). Said root is allofamic with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *krap (“to beat, thrash, winnow”), the latter whence Tibetan ('khrab-pa, “to strike, beat, winnow, fan”), Old Chinese 壓 (OC *qreːb, “to press down”) (STEDT).
