Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (hlyaṁ "run over, overflow"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Note similarities to Old Chinese (OC *ʔl'uːm, *r'uːmʔ, *l'um, “profound, clear”); though not listed on Wiktionary, Kanji Jitenon does list "fill to the brim (to the point of overflowing)" as a classically attested meaning of the Chinese term in Sino-Xenic .

It is also unclear whether the "overflowing, dissolute" senses are related to the "brilliant, flame" senses. STEDT implicitly separates the two; see အလျှံ (a.hlyam) for more (though it also seems possible that the "overflow" senses are semantic extensions of the "flame" sense, via "spreading flame" > "overflow").”
