Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unknown. An isolated participle, which has been interpreted as a sigmatic aorist ϝάδ-σμενος, from the same root of ἁνδάνω (handánō, to please, delight) and ἥδομαι (hḗdomai, to be pleased), but note that the form has no aspiration. Wackernagel proposed connection with νέομαι (néomai, to return), assuming an original meaning "safe". Not compelling. See also the discussion page.
