Etymology
A hybrid of the Devanagari letter र (“ra”), the first consonant in रुपया (rupyā, “rupee”), and the Latin letter R, overstruck with an additional line similar to other currency symbols such as ¥ (“yen”), ₱ (“peso”) etc. It was created by Indian designer Udaya Kumar and introduced by the Indian government in 2010.
Symbol
₹
- The symbol representing the Indian rupee.
Usage notes
When used as a currency symbol, ₹ precedes the number it qualifies in English, despite being pronounced second. For example, “₹5” is read as “five rupees”, not “rupees five” unlike the usage in languages such as Hindi: “5₹”.
