Shift in pronunciation from earlier ちっこ (chikko),[1][2] arising from an original sense of "little one";[1] compare adjective 小さい (chīsai). The reference to genitalia was originally a euphemism. Compare similar usage for あそこ (asoko, literally “over there”).
