Usage notes

This term was used in ()(けん)()(じょ)(さん)()(かん)()()(ほう) (Hoken-fu Josan-fu Kango-fu Hō, lit. Act on Public Health Nurses, Midwives and Nurses) enacted in 1948. This act provided that (かん)()() (kangofu) were nurses who were female. Men also can do women equivalent work and they were called (かん)()(にん) (kangonin, male nurse, lit. nurse person) in the act. (かん)()(にん) (kangonin) were applied on provisions relating to (かん)()() (kangofu).

In 1968, (かん)()(にん) (kangonin) was renamed to (かん)()() (kangoshi). (かん)()() (kangofu) and (かん)()() (kangoshi) were combined into (かん)()() (kangoshi) with propose of genderlessness in 2002.
