Historical forms of the character

References:

Mostly from Richard Sears' Chinese Etymology site (authorisation),
which in turn draws data from various collections of ancient forms of Chinese characters, including:

  • Shuowen Jiezi (small seal),
  • Jinwen Bian (bronze inscriptions),
  • Liushutong (Liushutong characters) and
  • Yinxu Jiaguwen Bian (oracle bone script).

Originally a pictogram (象形) – one or two arrows in a quiver.

In the bronze inscriptions, the arrowhead merged with the quiver into , giving rise to the form now written 𤰈 and inherited in the character .

The modern form 箙 is a phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *bɯɡ) : semantic 𥫗 (bamboo) + phonetic (OC *bɯɡ).
