Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean  (Yale: nyekh). From obsolete (nyeop, “side”), whence modern (yeop, “side”). It escaped the regular word-initial ny > y sound change as it was chiefly found as the second component of compounds expressing directions and proximity in time.
