江 è anche il kanji di origine del carattere katakana エ (e, storicamente, ye)

Nel periodo Nara 江 era il man'yo'kana usato per il suono /ye/, che allora era distinto da ゑ (we) che era 惠 e え (e) rappresentata da 衣, tuttavia quest'ultimo suono venne unito alla vocale え prima del periodo Heian, che divenne pronunciata soltanto /ye/, e ゑ rimase /ɰᵝe/ fino al Periodo Kamakura quando divenne pronunciato anch'esso /ye/.

Il suono /ye/ fu usato fino al periodo Edo, che si trova in alcune parole come Yedo, Yen e Yebisu.
