Etymology

From ска́ред (skáred) +‎ -ный (-nyj), from Proto-Slavic *skarędъ. Cognates include Old Church Slavonic скарѧдь (skarędĭ), Czech škaredý and Polish szkaradny.

Vasmer also suspects relation with Sanskrit अवस्कर (avaskara, trash, ordure), Ancient Greek σκῶρ (skôr, dung), and Proto-Germanic *skarną (filth, dung) (whence English skarn and sharn), which would make it derive from Proto-Indo-European *sóḱr̥ (excrement, dung)
