Middle Armenian

Etymology

The root is աղատ- (aġat-, lamentation, caress, supplication) (compare dialectal աղատ (aġat, supplication; caress), աղըտ (aġət, lamentation)), of uncertain origin. Turkish ağıt may be borrowed from Armenian.

According to Martirosyan, probably a rhyming formation based on աղաչ- (ałačʻ-) and պաղատ- (pałat-); compare dialectal աղատ-պաղատ (aġat-paġat, supplication).
