From Proto-Armenian *(h)imp-, from Proto-Indo-European *pimbeti reflecting the reduplicated present *píph₃eti with analogical nasal infix of the root *peh₃-. Alternatively from Proto-Armenian *en-(h)ipe-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁en-*píbeti from the same root *peh₃-.[1] The verb is suppletive: part of the conjugation is filled by forms of *արբանեմ (*arbanem, to drink), from the root արբ- (arb-).
