The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (“to protect”) with a semantic shift “to protect” → “to watch over” → “to watch, to look”. See also նայիմ (nayim), յայտ (yayt).

According to some there are subtleties in the meaning of three synonyms: հայել (hayel) means “to look from below upwards”, նայել (nayel) means “to look from above downwards” and տեսանել (tesanel) means “to look straight”.
