Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tegirmen (“mill”),[1] a development from *tegir- (“round, circle; to turn, to spin”). Cognate with Azerbaijani dəyirman, Bashkir тирмән (tirmən), Crimean Tatar degirmen, Kazakh диірмен (diırmen), Kyrgyz тегирмен (tegirmen), Turkmen degirmen, Uyghur تۈگمەن (tügmen) and Uzbek tegirmon.
