Wholly regular from Arabic شَمْع (šamʕ, wax; candle; torch). The sound shift ش (ş) to چ (ç) has been of some frequency, also found in for example چلتیك (çeltik, rice), چمشیر (çimşir, box). The match with Chinese (MC sream, “fire; pine”) is probably a coincidence.
