Borrowed from Arabic طَلَبَ (ṭalaba). In the dialects, the rules of begadkefat are disregarded hence the absence of the normally-expected /w/ or /v/.

1. to ask for; request; order

   Synonyms: ܒܵܥܹܐ (bāˁē), ܫܵܐܹܠ (šāˀēl)

   ܝܵܠܵܕ݇ܐ ܒܥܵܠܘܿܠܵܐ ܛܠܝܼܒ݂ ܠܹܗ ܙ̈ܘܼܙܹܐ ܡܸܢܝܼ.

   yālā b-ˁālōlā ṭlīḇ lēh zūzē minī.

   A boy in the street asked me for money.

2. to ask for someone's hand in marriage; to propose; to get engaged; to be/become betrothed

   Synonym: ܡܵܟ݂ܹܪ (māḵēr)

   ܒܪܵܬܝܼ ܛܠܝܼܒ݂ܬܵܐ ܝܠܵܗ̇. ― brātī ṭlīḇtā ìlāh. ― My daughter is engaged.

The preposition ܡܸܢ (min, “from”) is used when the argument is a person.
