From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰadrás (“auspicious, fortunate, happy”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰn̥d-ró-s, from the root *bʰend- (“to be happy, glad”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬠𐬀𐬜𐬭𐬀 (hubaδra, “fortunate”). Alternatively, Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰadrás has been connected to Proto-Germanic *batizô (“better”), from a Proto-Indo-European root *bʰed-.
