Etymology

A late root, only attested in Classical texts and after, of uncertain origin.

Tedesco derives the root from वृत् (vṛt, to turn, rotate), via a series of sound changes वृत् (vṛt) > वृत्त (vṛtta) > *विट्ट (viṭṭa) > वेल्लति (vellati), relating it to वल् (val, to turn about).

Burrow considers the root as an ll-extension of a series of Prakrit verbs of the form (ve-a-), relating them to वेज् (vej) and वेप् (vep, to tremble, shake). He also considers the "to wind around, be bent" meanings of the root to be etymologically distinct, deriving the latter from वेष्ट् (veṣṭ, to wind or twist round).
