Etymology

Of uncertain origin.

Traditionally derived directly from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (to turn, wind, round). However, due to the chronologically late attestation of the root, this is unlikely.

Tedesco derives the root from वृत् (vṛt, to turn, rotate); connections to तोरण (toraṇa, an arch), वलि (vali, a wrinkle), वलय (valaya, a bracelet, circle), and वेल्ल् (vell, to shake about, sway) have also been proposed.
