From อุบล (ù-bon, lotus) +‎ ราชธานี (râat-chá-taa-nii, royal city; capital city; royal residence; etc, literally royal abode); after Prince Pathum (1709—1795), the first ruler of this city as a vassal state of Bangkok, whose name, Pathum (ปทุม), means "lotus"; coined by Rama I of Bangkok in 1793.[1]
