This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (pui. "send"), while Luce compares Old Chinese 付 (OC *pos, “to deliver, pay”) and Tibetan སྤྲོད (sprod, “to give, offer”) as cognates.[1] Unclear if the "send off" and "be piled" senses are related, though MED groups them together.
Note similarities to 赴 (OC *pʰoɡs, “to go to, attend”) for the "send off" sense (albeit probably superficial), and 阜 (OC *buʔ, “mound”) for the "be piled" sense (though this latter character is thought to be related to a different Burmese root).”
