First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄂᆞ리〮 (Yale: nòlí), equivalent to 내리 (naeri-, to move downwards) +‎ (-i, adverb-deriving suffix), cf. Middle Korean ᄂᆞ리〮다〮 (Yale: nòlí-tá), older form of 내리다 (naerida).
