First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 밀〯다〮 (Yale: mǐl-tá).

However, placename glosses in the Samguk sagi (Chapter 34) imply that a native Korean word with the phonetic value of () (Middle Chinese /mˠiɪt̚/, Middle Sino-Korean míl) was considered equivalent to Chinese (tuī) "to push" as early as 757.
