From Turkish İskenderun and Ottoman Turkish إسكندرون (İskenderun), from Arabic الْإِسْكَنْدَرُون (al-ʔIskandarūn), ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia, “Alexandria”), from Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, “Alexander”) + -εια (-eia, “-ia: forming place names”) in reference to Alexander the Great of Macedonia.
