From Proto-Balto-Slavic *źulas, perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰwel- (to lie, deceive, bend). Cognate with Lithuanian žulas (rough), (dialectal) atžūlùs (rude), Latvian zveļu (to turn aside); outside of Balto-Slavic, compare Sanskrit ह्वृ (hvṛ, to deviate, be crooked, be devious), Avestan 𐬰𐬎𐬭𐬀𐬵 (zurah, injustice), as well as perhaps Ancient Greek φῆλος (phêlos, deceitful).
