Attested from dialects as a footwear since the 17th century, developing Middle High German slappe, slape (“the part of a head-covering hanging down like a pouch; klappen- oder beutelförmig herunterhängender Teil der Kopfbedeckung; Kopfbedeckung; Art Kappe”), hence in dialects a “loose shoe made by separating the front part of a shoe (der durch Abschneiden der Kappe zum Pantoffel gemachte Schuh; Pantoffel)”.
