Usage

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Dryden's work Secret-Love, or The Maiden-Queen, more commonly known as The Maiden Queen (1st edition, 1668; and 1669 version). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |year=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 1669 version, specify |year=1669. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1668).
  • |chapter= – if quoting from a part of the work other than the play as indicated in the second column of the following table, use this parameter to specify the name of the part as indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Preface Preface
Prologue Prologue
Second Prologue Second Prologue
Epilogue Epilogue. Written by a Person of Honour.
As the above chapters are unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/secretloveormaid00dryd/page/n6/mode/1up, specify |page=6. (The prologue is also unpaginated, but the template can determine the URL.)
  • |stanza= – the prologue is divided into six stanzas. Use this parameter to specify the stanza number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |stanza=I to |stanza=VI.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the act number (I–V) and scene number quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the act number quoted from. However, it is unable to do so if page 14, 22, 34, or 50 is specified, in which case use this parameter to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.

Act II
pages 14–22
Act III

Act V

  • |scene=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the scene number quoted from. However, if it is unable to do so, use this parameter to specify the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals, like this: |scene=i.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
