Etymology 2
The city is called 永市 (“Vĩnh thị”) in Đại Nam nhất thống chí and 永城庯 (“Vĩnh thành phố”) in the Đại Nam thực lục. The occurrence of 永 (SV: vĩnh) as the city name in these adminstrative/official documents is obviously just another case of the common practice of phonetic matching to form a new tên chữ from the original tên Nôm and is of little actual etymological value.
In the past, this place was known by many names: Kẻ Vang, Kẻ Vịnh, Kẻ Vinh, Kẻ Vĩnh, Vinh Giang, Vinh Doanh.
Proper noun
Vinh • (永)
- The provincial capital of Nghệ An, Vietnam
