From Middle High German zîdelbast from earlier zîlant, with Zeiland coexisting, the first part of the new compound being the afformative Zeidel- for terms related to bees and the second part Bast rendering a meaning of the term linde, linte = German Linde, English linden meaning the soft wood or bast of the linden tree.
