Romanian

Etymology

Probably from Vulgar Latin root *excotīre, from Classical Latin cōs, cōtis (whetstone). Compare cute and cuțit (knife). Cognate with Megleno-Romanian ascut, scuțǫt. Cf. also the semantic evolution of Catalan esmolar (sharpen), from mola (grindstone). Was also possibly influenced by a Vulgar Latin *acutiāre, from acūtus. Compare Italian aguzzare, Spanish aguzar. Another theory suggests the root *exacutīre, from exacūtus (sharpened, stimulated), from acūtus.
