Etymology

Probably of onomatopoeic origin; from the same stem as babirkál (to fritter, tinker) + -ál (frequentative verb-forming suffix). The stem may also be related to the stem of bibe, bibi and bíbelődik. Possibly developed under the influence of Slovak babrať (to fiddle with), from Proto-Slavic *babrati. First attested in 1784.[1]
