Etymology 2

Plural form of archaic hyll, newer form yll, of unclear origin. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁us-los, whence Old English ysle, Old Norse usli (embers), from *h₁ews- (to burn) or from Proto-Indo-European *h₂us-los, compare Sanskrit उस्र (usrá, reddish, ruddy; bright; matutinal), from *h₂ews- (to dawn).

Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *hĭwĭd-lʉh, from older Proto-Albanian *hud-lós, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *udrós. In this case the word could be connected to the name of the Illyrians, if this one was derived from Illyrian *Hullurio ((place or tribe) of the serpent).
