Etymology 2
Plural form of archaic hyll, newer form yll, of unclear origin. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁us-los, whence Old English ysle, Old Norse usli (“embers”), from *h₁ews- (“to burn”) or from Proto-Indo-European *h₂us-los, compare Sanskrit उस्र (usrá, “reddish, ruddy; bright; matutinal”), from *h₂ews- (“to dawn”).
Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *hĭwĭd-lʉh, from older Proto-Albanian *hud-lós, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *udrós. In this case the word could be connected to the name of the Illyrians, if this one was derived from Illyrian *Hullurio (“(place or tribe) of the serpent”).
Noun
hyj m (plural hyj, definite hyji, definite plural hyjtë)
