Probably maa +‎ -iainen. The -t- is of unknown origin, but likely serves an epenthetic purpose; it could be from maataa, a dialectal verb meaning "to crawl on the ground", which would make maatiainen equivalent to maa +‎ -taa +‎ -iainen. In that case, the dialectal sense "stunted, short" may be the original meaning. First attested in an 1833 dictionary compiled by Abraham Poppius.
