   • 1895, “Dimanĉ-trankvilo”, in Odd Tangerud, transl., La Montarino‎, translation of Haugtussa by Arne Garborg (in Norwegian Nynorsk):

     Per okulvitro / maljuna patrin’ / legas en libro / ĉe l’ tablofin’ / pensante pri fina vojaĝo.

     With spectacles, an old mother read a book at the table’s edge, thinking about a last voyage.

2. (rare) a lens of a pair of eyeglasses

     It was a man with a big monocle, who sat there and now seemed to search for something in his pockets.

The first Esperanto dictionary, the 1894 Universala Vortaro, used plural okulvitroj for eyeglasses. The vicissitudes of usage have given the singular an identical meaning.
