From a lengthened o-grade of Proto-Indo-European *selh₂- (“mercy, comfort”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἱλάσκομαι (hiláskomai, “to appease”) and perhaps Old Armenian աղաչեմ (ałačʻem, “to pray”). The traditional comparison by Pokorny to Proto-Germanic *sēliz (“happy, kind, fortunate”) (whence English silly) does not seem to be supported by later linguists.
