Etymology

First attested in the old definite ablative in the Mëshari of Buzuku as fermeshit

Borrowed from Greek θρύμμα (thrýmma, crumb; fragment),[1] akin to Romanian fărâmă, Aromanian sãrmã.[2][3] The verb thërrmoj (to crumble, shatter) was presumably coined in Albanian and borrowed into Balkan Romance as Aromanian sãrmu (to crumble), Romanian fărma, sfărma, fărâma, sfărâma (to shatter, break), from which Aromanian sãrmã (crumb) and Romanian fărâmă, sfărâmă (crumb) may have been formed as deverbals. The borrowing into Balkan Romance must have happened at a time when the Aromanian phoneme /θ/, now present in foreign words, did not yet exist and was hence adapted as /s/, while Daco-Romanian must have loaned the term from a northern dialect which had /f/ in this position, as in fërmi, attested in Buzuku.

Has also been linked with ther (to slaughter, pierce),[4][5] however the morphemes at stake are not well identified and the semantical evolution is not straightforward.
